Subject “Biology” is a basement for most biological subjects passed by students<br />
later (Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Medical Genetics,<br />
Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pharmacology, Public Health, Internal<br />
Medicine).<br />
Medical Genetics<br />
The teaching <strong>of</strong> medical genetics is tightly co-ordinated with biology, histology<br />
and embryology, biochemistry, pathology, and with different clinical subjects.<br />
VI. FUTURE PLANS<br />
11. Future plans to improve <strong>the</strong> teaching given by <strong>the</strong> department.<br />
Biology<br />
1. Both <strong>the</strong> content and methods <strong>of</strong> teaching will develope continously. To<br />
consider particularities <strong>of</strong> our 1st year students <strong>the</strong> balance between <strong>the</strong><br />
lectures and class works must be not changed. Computer-aided teaching<br />
will be developed and its usefulness carefully evaluated.<br />
2. There is a serious need to change <strong>the</strong> system <strong>of</strong> admission into Faculty<br />
pupils from Russian language secondary schools. It is up to <strong>the</strong> Faculty to<br />
organize a system for checking <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> Estonian language and to<br />
guarantee, if it is necessary, <strong>the</strong>ir participation in Estonian language intensive<br />
course before <strong>the</strong> full time studies.<br />
3. The teaching staff <strong>of</strong> “Biology” is interested to get feedback from questionnaire-based<br />
student evaluations after passing <strong>of</strong> course. For this we plan to<br />
introduce an independent questionnaire.<br />
4. The technical base <strong>of</strong> teaching (preparations, videos, PCs, s<strong>of</strong>tware) needs<br />
modernization. We also hope that <strong>the</strong> situation where 4 teachers must use<br />
3 working places and 2 PC will be changed.<br />
Medical Genetics<br />
1. As was already said above it has been decided to bring teaching <strong>of</strong><br />
“Medical Genetics “ to <strong>the</strong> 5 th year <strong>of</strong> studium. Quite recently it was also<br />
decided to rename <strong>the</strong> course as “Human molecular and clinical genetics”<br />
and raise <strong>the</strong> teaching amount from 2 CP to 4 credit points. The studium<br />
will start in automn <strong>of</strong> 2001 with lecture course (42 hours), and with<br />
practical works in spring (54 hours). In spring 2001 we also start teaching<br />
(2 CP) <strong>of</strong> “Medical Genetics” to stomatology students as one part <strong>of</strong> “Children<br />
stomatology”. The course will consist <strong>of</strong> 16 hours <strong>of</strong> lectures, and 32<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> practical works.<br />
2. Taking into consideration <strong>the</strong> changes in <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> teaching for medical<br />
students, and a new course for stomatology students <strong>the</strong>re is a great<br />
need in <strong>the</strong> better technical base <strong>of</strong> teaching (preparations, videos, PCs,<br />
s<strong>of</strong>tware). We must pay more attention to <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> written aid<br />
materials for students.
