Subject “Biology” is a basement for most biological subjects passed by students
later (Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Medical Genetics,
Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pharmacology, Public Health, Internal
Medicine).
Medical Genetics
The teaching of medical genetics is tightly co-ordinated with biology, histology
and embryology, biochemistry, pathology, and with different clinical subjects.
VI. FUTURE PLANS
11. Future plans to improve the teaching given by the department.
Biology
1. Both the content and methods of teaching will develope continously. To
consider particularities of our 1st year students the balance between the
lectures and class works must be not changed. Computer-aided teaching
will be developed and its usefulness carefully evaluated.
2. There is a serious need to change the system of admission into Faculty
pupils from Russian language secondary schools. It is up to the Faculty to
organize a system for checking the knowledge of Estonian language and to
guarantee, if it is necessary, their participation in Estonian language intensive
course before the full time studies.
3. The teaching staff of “Biology” is interested to get feedback from questionnaire-based
student evaluations after passing of course. For this we plan to
introduce an independent questionnaire.
4. The technical base of teaching (preparations, videos, PCs, software) needs
modernization. We also hope that the situation where 4 teachers must use
3 working places and 2 PC will be changed.
Medical Genetics
1. As was already said above it has been decided to bring teaching of
“Medical Genetics “ to the 5 th year of studium. Quite recently it was also
decided to rename the course as “Human molecular and clinical genetics”
and raise the teaching amount from 2 CP to 4 credit points. The studium
will start in automn of 2001 with lecture course (42 hours), and with
practical works in spring (54 hours). In spring 2001 we also start teaching
(2 CP) of “Medical Genetics” to stomatology students as one part of “Children
stomatology”. The course will consist of 16 hours of lectures, and 32
hours of practical works.
2. Taking into consideration the changes in the amount of teaching for medical
students, and a new course for stomatology students there is a great
need in the better technical base of teaching (preparations, videos, PCs,
software). We must pay more attention to the preparation of written aid
materials for students.
