• After many years we have re-established a course of Biophysics for the
medical students.
• There is a good set of optional courses helping students to get the most recent
scientific information in the certain fields of physiology (Neurophysiology
of pain, Basic neuroscience, Research methods in respiratory physiology).
• Department of Physiology has good facilities for demonstration of video
tapes. Currently we are using the video recordings for the teaching of behavioural
physiology. The students have a chance to score the animal behaviour
from the video recordings.
• We have taken an advantage from the developments of molecular physiology.
We have introduced the method of a study of ACE gene polymorphism
to the set of practical works delivered to the medical students.
• We have a re-arranged the course schedules of Human physiology in order
to increase the activity of students during the classes by taking out the
scores of tests, seminars and final exam in the forming of final grade for the
course.
5. Name the factors which most disturb teaching (excluding financial resources).
1. The co-ordination of curriculum between the pre-clinical departments is
very limited.
2. We have translated the textbook of R.F. Schmidt and G. Thews “Human
physiology” into the Estonian language, but university library is lacking the
textbooks in the English (Guyton & Hall, Silverthorn etc). It is almost impossible
to suggest the additional books, because there may be only 1-2
copies of that in the library.
3. The teaching load of teachers per week is high.
4. The groups of students are too big (sometimes more than 24 students) for
our laboratory space.
5. The background of students is very different if we are considering their basic
level of knowledge. Several of them are very poor in high school
mathematics and chemistry.
II. EVALUATION OF TEACHING
6. How is the quality of the teaching in your department evaluated? How are
the content and the modes of the teaching changed on the basis of the
evaluation?
There is no permanent system for the quality control in the Medical Faculty.
However, during the last years the Dean’s Office of Medical Faculty in collaboration
with the student organisations has started to evaluate the quality of
teaching, including also the Department of Physiology. For that purpose after
the exam the anonymous questionnaires have been distributed among the
