• After many years we have re-established a course <strong>of</strong> Biophysics for <strong>the</strong><br />

medical students.<br />

• There is a good set <strong>of</strong> optional courses helping students to get <strong>the</strong> most recent<br />

scientific information in <strong>the</strong> certain fields <strong>of</strong> physiology (Neurophysiology<br />

<strong>of</strong> pain, Basic neuroscience, Research methods in respiratory physiology).<br />

• <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Physiology has good facilities for demonstration <strong>of</strong> video<br />

tapes. Currently we are using <strong>the</strong> video recordings for <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong> behavioural<br />

physiology. The students have a chance to score <strong>the</strong> animal behaviour<br />

from <strong>the</strong> video recordings.<br />

• We have taken an advantage from <strong>the</strong> developments <strong>of</strong> molecular physiology.<br />

We have introduced <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> a study <strong>of</strong> ACE gene polymorphism<br />

to <strong>the</strong> set <strong>of</strong> practical works delivered to <strong>the</strong> medical students.<br />

• We have a re-arranged <strong>the</strong> course schedules <strong>of</strong> Human physiology in order<br />

to increase <strong>the</strong> activity <strong>of</strong> students during <strong>the</strong> classes by taking out <strong>the</strong><br />

scores <strong>of</strong> tests, seminars and final exam in <strong>the</strong> forming <strong>of</strong> final grade for <strong>the</strong><br />

course.<br />

5. <strong>Name</strong> <strong>the</strong> factors which most disturb teaching (excluding financial resources).<br />

1. The co-ordination <strong>of</strong> curriculum between <strong>the</strong> pre-clinical departments is<br />

very limited.<br />

2. We have translated <strong>the</strong> textbook <strong>of</strong> R.F. Schmidt and G. Thews “Human<br />

physiology” into <strong>the</strong> Estonian language, but university library is lacking <strong>the</strong><br />

textbooks in <strong>the</strong> English (Guyton & Hall, Silverthorn etc). It is almost impossible<br />

to suggest <strong>the</strong> additional books, because <strong>the</strong>re may be only 1-2<br />

copies <strong>of</strong> that in <strong>the</strong> library.<br />

3. The teaching load <strong>of</strong> teachers per week is high.<br />

4. The groups <strong>of</strong> students are too big (sometimes more than 24 students) for<br />

our laboratory space.<br />

5. The background <strong>of</strong> students is very different if we are considering <strong>the</strong>ir basic<br />

level <strong>of</strong> knowledge. Several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are very poor in high school<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matics and chemistry.<br />

II. EVALUATION OF TEACHING<br />

6. How is <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching in your department evaluated? How are<br />

<strong>the</strong> content and <strong>the</strong> modes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching changed on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

evaluation?<br />

There is no permanent system for <strong>the</strong> quality control in <strong>the</strong> Medical Faculty.<br />

However, during <strong>the</strong> last years <strong>the</strong> Dean’s Office <strong>of</strong> Medical Faculty in collaboration<br />

with <strong>the</strong> student organisations has started to evaluate <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong><br />

teaching, including also <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Physiology. For that purpose after<br />

<strong>the</strong> exam <strong>the</strong> anonymous questionnaires have been distributed among <strong>the</strong>
