CONTENT OF THE TEACHING 1. How have the aims and objectives described in your curriculum changed during the last five years? In basic pharmacology (3 rd year students) the molecular and cellular basis of drug action and pharmacokinetics have become a central part of the curriculum in pharmacology and toxicology. The characterisation of individual drugs (pharmaceutical preparations) is based on the recent important advances in the molecular biology of receptors, enzymes, transporters and other target molecules for drug action. It has become increasingly important for practising physicians to understand the basic principles of cellular communication and drug-receptor interactions. Our curriculum aims to provide the students with a conceptual framework on which they can build knowledge of individual drugs, drug groups and on which they can also later add information about future therapeutic agents. In addition, target-based rational drug design is presented as a new approach to the development of therapeutic agents. Pharmacokinetics, toxicology, immunopharmaology and chemotherapy of viral diseases have become increasingly important parts of the curriculum. All the students get in the beginning of study year exact program of teaching and several other teaching aids, prepared by department members. Drug toxicology course is given to the medical students during the third year and consists of two parts: mandatory course (8 hours of problem-oriented and integrated lectures, and 4 hours of the seminars) and two optional courses: theoretical (10 hours of lectures and 12 hours of seminars) and practical one (30 hours of experimental work and seminars). The drug toxicology course is fully based on the acquired knowledge from basic pharmacology course and integrated with the basic knowledge of pharmacology and related disciplines such as pathology and biochemistry. The different principles in mandatory and optional courses are used. Mandatory course is based on the traditional ap- 41
