are preserved in French manuscripts, thus attesting their popularity;<br />

and their typical phrases such as 'Hodie illuxit nobis' or 'Dicamus<br />

omnes', are even found in twelfth-century tropers at Madrid. One of<br />

the most interesting of these is the 'Insignis praeconiis' of the<br />

martyrs St. Denys and his companions; the abbey of this dedication<br />

dates back to the seventh century:<br />

6. Chants after the Gospel. On the way back to the altar the<br />

Trisagion was repeated: then followed the sermon, after which a<br />

Litany to which the people responded 'Precamur te, Domine,<br />

miserere'. This ended the first part of the service, the Missa catechu-<br />

menorum.<br />
