SRI water management practice address some key policy issues related<br />

with water availability and extensification <strong>of</strong> irrigation schemes. In The<br />

Gambia and the semi‐arid Sahel, increasing the area under <strong>rice</strong> irrigation is<br />

influenced by the amount <strong>of</strong> water available <strong>to</strong> support future expansion.<br />

There is a high demand for water in the Sahel, and in some cases, the rivers<br />

and distributaries are already failing <strong>to</strong> support the present irrigation<br />

schemes. SRI can reduce water requirements for <strong>production</strong> by 30‐50%, while<br />

increasing yield and also the need for use <strong>of</strong> agrochemicals, <strong>of</strong>ten unavailable<br />

or beyond the financial reach <strong>of</strong> small producers.
