A decline in area under <strong>rice</strong> cultivation is also experienced in other West<br />

African countries, especially those in the drier Sahel region (Figure 3). In<br />

Nigeria, however, there has been significant <strong>increase</strong> in area under <strong>rice</strong><br />

cultivation, most probably as a result <strong>of</strong> government restrictions on <strong>rice</strong><br />

importation in order <strong>to</strong> reduce competition with domestic <strong>production</strong>.<br />
