Transitional <strong>Housing</strong> Assistance<br />

Limited duration housing assistance – usually 30 days to 2 years – intended to help people transition from housing crisis into permanent, stable<br />

housing. Effective where consumers are likely to become self-sufficient or transition to permanent housing by the time it ends.<br />

GOALS & DESCRIPTIONS<br />

Assistance for more than 1 or 2<br />

payments. Based on income and<br />

FMR; <strong>of</strong>ten lasts up to 2 yrs<br />

Best where consumers remain in<br />

housing while waiting for subsidy;<br />

and can transition to permanent<br />

housing within time limit<br />

Temporary housing plus support<br />

services to help people overcome<br />

problems that led to homelessness<br />

and return to permanent<br />

independent housing<br />

Best where homeless population is<br />

significant and support services are<br />

in place<br />

people waiting for permanent<br />

- Can be implemented quickly –<br />

less complex than facility-based<br />

assistance<br />

- Can promote long-term stability<br />

even after clients leave<br />

- Provides leverage (conditions <strong>of</strong><br />

residency) to ensure that clients<br />

benefit from support services<br />

- Does not create long-term housing<br />

- Some landlords unwilling<br />

- Does not include support services<br />

that some may need to retain<br />

housing<br />

- Sometimes not enough quality<br />

rental units at FMR<br />

- Support services costly<br />

- To achieve success, clients must<br />
