In order to understand the theories of language acquisition and language<br />

development, one must remember that man is a biological, psychological, social,<br />

intellectual, cultural and spiritual being. Therefore, questions about language<br />

acquisition need to be addressed from a holistic point of view, and individual<br />

deviations must always be expected, corresponding to the reality of human<br />

performance (Gesell & Ilg, 1946). Truby (1976) stated that "Every child is different<br />

... Not only is the language of every child unique, but so is the developmental<br />

pathway associated with the establishment and accomplishment of that language"<br />

(p.84).<br />

Furthermore, as is evident from the above, different schools, and hence<br />

theories of language development, do not agree when and according to which<br />

criteria, the beginnings of speech should be set. They vary from those schools who<br />

comprehend the beginnings of language from birth, and those who comprehend it at<br />

the two-word stage (Oskaar, 1983). These opposing views continue to be held by<br />

researchers of today (Bousted, 1989; Swan, 1992). Regarding the assessment of a<br />

child's expressive language Griffiths' (1960) proposed scoring criteria, utilized for the<br />

20 small pictures and the large picture of the Hearing and Speech Scale, were<br />

devised from sound developmental theories which included the domain of language<br />

development.<br />

STANDARDIZED TESTS SPECIFICALLY PERTAINING TO<br />

CHILDREN'S LANGUAGE<br />

Language is of central importance in childrens' development and is vital for<br />

their success at school and in the world beyond. Normally developing children often<br />

seem to be inexhaustible sources of spoken language. They seem to relish their<br />

developing abilities and to use them on every possible occasion. However, the<br />

situation immediately becomes more complicated when an attempt is made to<br />

determine precisely what language a child is capable of producing, how much a child<br />
