5.6.5 Definition of outcomes<br />

5.6.5.1 Mortality<br />

Table 5.67 shows that in-hospital and approximate 30-day mortality is 3.8% after lung<br />

cancer surgery. Survival 1 year after surgery is 85.5%. After 2 years it is 73.5%. Mean<br />

(median not <strong>de</strong>fined) survival time was 27 months (not shown in Table 5.67).<br />

Figure 5.28 confirms how survival improves with <strong>de</strong>creasing disease stage. Pati<strong>en</strong>ts with<br />

stage 3 and 4 lung cancer have the worst survival curves while stage 1 and 2 pati<strong>en</strong>ts<br />

have the best survival. Pati<strong>en</strong>ts with unknown disease stage, i.e. the purple line in Figure<br />

5.28, are in betwe<strong>en</strong> the first two stage groups.<br />
