6.2.4 Definition of <strong>volume</strong><br />
As is explained in <strong>KCE</strong> report 14, there are four levels of cardiology services in Belgium:<br />
• A hospitals have no catheterization laboratory (i.e. with diagnostic imaging<br />
equipm<strong>en</strong>t used to support the catheterization procedure);<br />
• B1 hospitals perform only diagnostic catheterisations (i.e. coronary<br />
angiographies);<br />
• B2 hospitals perform both diagnostic and interv<strong>en</strong>tional procedures with<br />
the exception of CABG;<br />
• B3 hospitals perform all diagnostic and interv<strong>en</strong>tional cardiac<br />
procedures.57<br />
There are 29 B2/B3 c<strong>en</strong>tres. Procedures that were billed in A c<strong>en</strong>tres but performed in<br />
a B2/B3 c<strong>en</strong>tre (with whom the A c<strong>en</strong>tre has a transfer agreem<strong>en</strong>t) are not inclu<strong>de</strong>d in<br />
the following analyses. It concerns 32 CABGs with/without heart valve repair or<br />
replacem<strong>en</strong>t that were billed in 6 A c<strong>en</strong>tres.<br />
