It seems clear to me that some of the writers in O-blek 12 – Lee Ann Brown<br />

and Jessica Grim for example – have already established themselves as major<br />

poets. On anybody’s terms.<br />

>Apropos Claim 3: Does it make sense to compare the New Coast, an<br />

>emphatically "prospective" collection of 119 young writers, to such<br />

>retrospective anthologies as the New American <strong>Poetry</strong> and ITAT?<br />

I for one don’t buy the "prospective" nature of O-blek 12 as anything other than<br />

as a stance. And a troubling one. The average age of the poets in O-blek 12<br />

may well be 5 years OLDER than the poets in the Allen anthology, for<br />

example. And the aggressive placement of the "spirit" section at the front of the<br />

"technique" (i.e. theory) volume shows an overall argumentative structure that<br />

is more aggressive even than the Tree. What "prospective" seems to mean here<br />

is a reluctance to acknowledge or own its own position. At least the Apex folks<br />

don’t suffer from that.…
