Unit 119 Wireless and mobile communications<br />

Introduction<br />
This unit is about the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples underly<strong>in</strong>g the operation of wireless communication systems and<br />
their components.<br />
Unit aim<br />
The unit aims to develop knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g of wireless communications with emphasis<br />
on cellular mobile systems.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />
There are five learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />
1. Describe wireless access systems and cellular mobile systems<br />
2. Describe radio wave propagation <strong>in</strong> fixed and mobile environments<br />
3. Describe basics of multiple access <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g FDMA and TDMA of wireless access networks<br />
4. Develop knowledge of the function<strong>in</strong>g of cellular mobile systems<br />
5. Develop knowledge of wireless network standards<br />
Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 would be direct<br />
taught hours and the rema<strong>in</strong>der for laboratory/practical work and <strong>in</strong>dependent study. The unit may<br />
be carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />
Assessment<br />
This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper.<br />
The learner is expected to have knowledge of electronic communications and mathematical<br />
methods as per the <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> Advanced Technician <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Telecommunication units<br />
2730-022 and 023 or relevant HND of other equivalent.<br />
