Unit 109 Irrigation eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Level</strong>: 6<br />

Introduction<br />

This unit is about the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples underly<strong>in</strong>g the design, operation and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of irrigation and<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>age systems.<br />

Unit aim<br />

The unit aims to teach the knowledge, applications and design of pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of irrigation systems,<br />

irrigation structures and water management.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />

There are three learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />

1. Understand the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of irrigation and dra<strong>in</strong>age systems, field application methods and<br />

social and economical impacts<br />

2. Apply the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of water management to achieve optimum efficiency of irrigation systems<br />

3. Design reservoir capacities and select suitable types of irrigation canals and structures<br />

Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />

It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 hours would be<br />

direct taught hours, 30 for hour’s laboratory practical/tutorial work and the rema<strong>in</strong>der for<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent study. The unit may be carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />

Assessment<br />

This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation plus satisfactory<br />

completion of the prescribed practical and laboratory work. The assessments will be carried out<br />

separately.<br />

The learner is expected to have sufficient knowledge <strong>in</strong> mathematics ie as per <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong><br />

Advanced Technician <strong>Diploma</strong> 6165 or relevant HND or other equivalent.<br />
