Unit 123 Computer architecture and operat<strong>in</strong>g systems<br />
<strong>Level</strong>: 6<br />
Introduction<br />
This unit is about the computer as a digital system and the operat<strong>in</strong>g systems used for operation.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce most practical operat<strong>in</strong>g systems are written <strong>in</strong> C-based languages, this course will use C.<br />
Unit aim<br />
The aim of the unit is to develop an understand<strong>in</strong>g of the operation of computer operat<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />
There are four learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />
1. Read and understand C language and construct <strong>in</strong>termediate level C programs<br />
2. Describe the basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples beh<strong>in</strong>d the design of modern computer systems<br />
3. Describe the functions of the major components of an operat<strong>in</strong>g system<br />
4. Develop familiarity with graphical and command-l<strong>in</strong>e operat<strong>in</strong>g systems<br />
Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 would be direct<br />
taught hours while the rest is for <strong>in</strong>dependent study and laboratory practical work. The unit may be<br />
carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />
Assessment<br />
This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper.<br />
Learners are expected to be familiar with the concepts gates, symbolic logic, assembly language,<br />
and basic computer architecture as per the <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> 7261/7267 awards or relevant HND of<br />
other equivalent.<br />
