Introduction<br />
This unit is about the basics of electrical mach<strong>in</strong>es and systems.<br />
Unit aim<br />
The aim of this unit is to provide an understand<strong>in</strong>g of the construction and operat<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of<br />
Electrical Mach<strong>in</strong>es and Electrical systems.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />
There are two learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />
1. Expla<strong>in</strong> construction, operat<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and area of use of transformers, <strong>in</strong>duction motors,<br />
and synchronous generators and DC mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />
2. Expla<strong>in</strong> the operat<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of ma<strong>in</strong> elements <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> power generation, transmission<br />
and distribution<br />
Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 should be direct<br />
taught hours and the rema<strong>in</strong>der for laboratory, practical work and <strong>in</strong>dependent study. The unit may<br />
be carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />
Assessment<br />
This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation plus satisfactory<br />
completion of the prescribed practical and laboratory work. The assessments will be carried out<br />
separately.<br />
Learners are expected to possess knowledge as per the <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> Advanced Technician <strong>Diploma</strong><br />
8030-226 or a relevant HND or other equivalent.<br />
