Unit 138 Quality and reliability eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Level</strong>: 6<br />

Introduction<br />

Quality is the degree to which performance of goods and services meets expectations, whereas the<br />

reliability is the probability that a system or component performs its <strong>in</strong>tended function for a<br />

specified <strong>in</strong>terval under stated conditions. This unit is about the design process that leads to reliable<br />

systems with built-<strong>in</strong> quality. It enables measurement of effectiveness and repeatability.<br />

Unit aim<br />

The aim of this unit is to develop knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g of artefact quality, reliability, safety,<br />

and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ability by measurement and plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />

There are four learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />

1. Understand the importance of quality and reliability<br />

2. Use methods for measur<strong>in</strong>g and improv<strong>in</strong>g quality and reliability<br />

3. Develop quality and reliability programme plans<br />

4. Adopt Quality Management Systems <strong>in</strong>to organisations<br />

Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />

It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 90 should be direct<br />

taught hours and the rema<strong>in</strong>der for laboratory practical work and <strong>in</strong>dependent study. The unit may<br />

be carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />

Assessment<br />

This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper.<br />

Learners are expected to possess knowledge of statistics and probability <strong>in</strong> mathematics as per the<br />

<strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> Advance Technician <strong>Diploma</strong> level 2565 or relevant HND or other equivalent.<br />
