Unit 104 Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g survey<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Level</strong>: 6<br />
Introduction<br />
This unit is about the fundamental survey techniques required for various civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
applications <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gs, irrigation systems, roads, railways and tunnels.<br />
Unit aim<br />
The unit aims to develop understand<strong>in</strong>g of advanced theories of survey<strong>in</strong>g and modern survey<strong>in</strong>g<br />
techniques and procedures used <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g survey<strong>in</strong>g applications.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />
There are four learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />
1. Understand the error types, random, systematic and gross; know their source and how to<br />
manage them<br />
2. Carry out a range of survey types us<strong>in</strong>g modern equipment and technology, and tak<strong>in</strong>g due<br />
regard of accuracy, precision and errors<br />
3. Analyse survey data accurately and reliably us<strong>in</strong>g standard convention<br />
4. Apply survey methods to <strong>in</strong>dustrial applications<br />
Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 hours would be<br />
direct taught hours, 60 hours practical work and the rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>in</strong>dependent study. This may be<br />
carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />
Assessment<br />
This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation plus satisfactory<br />
completion of the prescribed practical and laboratory work. The assessments will be carried out<br />
separately.<br />
The learner is expected to have sound knowledge of the related materials at the level of <strong>City</strong> &<br />
<strong>Guilds</strong> Advanced Technician <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Construction Unit 6165-30-061 or relevant HND or other<br />
equivalent. This <strong>in</strong>cludes the practical aspects of sett<strong>in</strong>g out of works and a detailed understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of the techniques used <strong>in</strong> survey<strong>in</strong>g and sett<strong>in</strong>g out and their purpose.<br />
