Unit 127 Software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Level</strong>: 6<br />
Introduction<br />
This unit is about the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and processes of design<strong>in</strong>g and build<strong>in</strong>g complex software systems.<br />
Unit aim<br />
The aim of this unit is to provide knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g of design<strong>in</strong>g, implement<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
modify<strong>in</strong>g software so that it is of higher quality, more affordable, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>able, and faster to build.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />
There are five learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />
1. Understand the software development life cycle<br />
2. Expla<strong>in</strong> methods of manag<strong>in</strong>g software projects<br />
3. Understand conventional methods of software design<br />
4. Understand the concept of object oriented software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
5. Understand advanced topics <strong>in</strong> software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 would be direct<br />
taught hours while the rema<strong>in</strong>der is for <strong>in</strong>dependent study and laboratory practical work. The unit<br />
may be carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />
Assessment<br />
This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper.<br />
Learners are expected to have knowledge of mathematics <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g statistics and probability and<br />
are expected to have computer programm<strong>in</strong>g ability as per the <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> 7261/7267 awards or<br />
relevant HND or other equivalent.<br />
