Unit 1<strong>01</strong> Management for eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />

<strong>Level</strong>: 6<br />

Introduction<br />

This unit deals with management pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, organisational structures, performance measurement,<br />

management of technology and control issues of particular relevance to eng<strong>in</strong>eers and<br />

technologists <strong>in</strong> management.<br />

Unit aim<br />

The aim is to provide eng<strong>in</strong>eers and technologists with an understand<strong>in</strong>g of management pr<strong>in</strong>ciples,<br />

organisational structures, performance measurement, management and control of technology, and<br />

develop the awareness of the learner to the broader functions of management.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />

There are four learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />

1 Describe managerial functions, roles and responsibilities<br />

2 Recognise the issues, difficulties and problems fac<strong>in</strong>g management and how to address them<br />

3 Develop an appreciation of economics, f<strong>in</strong>ancial account<strong>in</strong>g and f<strong>in</strong>ancial management, and<br />

understand eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g management, <strong>in</strong> relation to other managed activities, such as quality,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ance, account<strong>in</strong>g, legal, market<strong>in</strong>g, sales, purchas<strong>in</strong>g, logistics, and personnel<br />

4 Appreciate and use of tools for plann<strong>in</strong>g and decision mak<strong>in</strong>g process<br />

Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />

It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 would be direct<br />

taught hours while the rema<strong>in</strong>der is for <strong>in</strong>dependent study. The unit may be carried out on a full<br />

time or part time basis.<br />

Assessment<br />

This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour written exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper.<br />

Learners are expected to hold a relevant eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g qualification at the <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> Advanced<br />

Technician <strong>Diploma</strong>, HND or equivalent level.<br />
