Introduction<br />
This unit is about Electrical Mach<strong>in</strong>es and Drives.<br />
Unit aim<br />
The aim of this unit is the study of electrical mach<strong>in</strong>es and drives and <strong>in</strong>troduces the concepts<br />
govern<strong>in</strong>g the common types of mach<strong>in</strong>es, their characteristics and peculiarities. On completion of<br />
this unit, a learner will be capable of carry<strong>in</strong>g out the selection, commission<strong>in</strong>g and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of<br />
common electrical mach<strong>in</strong>es and drives.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes<br />
There are three learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes to this unit. The learner will:<br />
1. Expla<strong>in</strong> the general theory of electrical mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />
2. Expla<strong>in</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, characteristics and area of use of synchronous, <strong>in</strong>duction, DC,<br />
stepper and reluctance mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />
3. Expla<strong>in</strong> the general issues that are common to all drive systems<br />
Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
It is recommended that 150 hours should be allocated for this unit of which 60 would be direct<br />
taught hours while the rema<strong>in</strong>der is for <strong>in</strong>dependent study and laboratory practical work. The unit<br />
may be carried out on a full time or part time basis.<br />
Assessment<br />
This unit will be assessed by means of one three hour exam<strong>in</strong>ation paper plus satisfactory<br />
completion of prescribed assignments and laboratory work. The assessments will be carried out<br />
separately.<br />
Learners are expected to possess knowledge as per the <strong>City</strong> & <strong>Guilds</strong> Advanced Technician <strong>Diploma</strong><br />
8030-226 Electrical Plant and Equipment or relevant HND or other equivalent.<br />
