ers for devices and bus systems, and a robust
high-performance network protocol (Channel
Access). A large set of tools and libraries based
on this core facilitates building control systems
covering a wide range of size and complexity,
from small experiments with one CPU and only a
few pro cess variables, to large accelerator centers
with hundreds of CPUs and millions of process
variables. The EPICS tool-set provides most
of the functionality needed: data acquisition and
visualization, archiving, fast feedback loops and
slow control of complex procedures, and integration
with scientific analysis software and
modeling / simulation tool-kits.
Control System Studio (CSS) is an Eclipse-
RCP / RAP based framework, providing a variety
of visualization functionality (operating panels,
X / Y graphs, access to archived data, alarm
management) inside an integrated, consistent
user interface. The main control system GUI for
the FEL is a CSS application, that accesses the
EPICS process variables through the Channel
Access protocol.
BACnet gateway runs on any platform
For a long time, FHI guidelines have required all
building automation installations to be BACnet
accessible. Integration into an EPICS based
control system requires a BACnet Gateway that
allows Channel Access to access BACnet data.
Developed by Steven B. Webb of Oak Ridge
National Laboratory, such a gateway is available
to all EPICS users world-wide. Implemented
EPICS- BACnet Gateway als Hutschienen-PC unter Linux
EPICS- BACnet Gateway as DIN-Rail – PC Running Linux
in object-oriented C++, it runs on any EPICSsupported
platform. The structural similarities
between the distributed EPICS database and
BACnet lead to a robust and high performance
implementation. At the FEL, the BACnet Gateway
is implemented using an industrial DIN-rail
PC with two Ethernet ports and a CF card as
mass storage, running Debian Linux.
