As explained in SIA Stage 5, the Social Carbon Methodology (SCM) is linked to the Social Carbon<br />

Standard, which is being increasingly used in Brazil in particular, and is <strong>based</strong> on six capital assets or<br />

'resources' – natural, financial, human, <strong>social</strong>, carbon and biodiversity. The SCM involves the<br />

following stages (Social Carbon, 2009):<br />

• Diagnosis or 'zero point <strong>assessment</strong>' involving questionnaires, semi-structured interviews <strong>of</strong><br />

key in<strong>for</strong>mants, focus groups and other meetings. This should result in a description <strong>of</strong> all<br />

the possible positive or negative <strong>social</strong>, economic and environmental <strong>impact</strong>s;<br />

• Selection <strong>of</strong> indicators from a list <strong>of</strong> approved indicators <strong>for</strong> each resource type;<br />

• Monitoring <strong>of</strong> indicators using the 'zero point <strong>assessment</strong>' as the baseline, resulting in<br />

annual or periodic monitoring reports;<br />
