To sum : up the theme of conflict in Lawrence: Sagar views<br />

it as a deterioration of the search for balance.<br />

The first<br />

novels present the struggle, not in terms of dominance but in<br />

terms of a relation of equilibrium.<br />

After Women in Love,<br />

Lawrence puts the conflict in terms of male dominance.<br />

Ford also<br />

seems to agree with this point of view.<br />

The difference is<br />

in<br />

what he qualifies as 'male dominance' in the later novels<br />

is Lawrence's attempt to make his peace with his father.<br />

As for<br />

Hough's view, conflict in Lawrence is always related to an<br />

exploration of being in the relations between men and women.<br />

No matter how exhaustively Lawrence's works have been'<br />

analysed by different people with different ideas, new views are<br />

still possible.<br />

My view of Lawrence sometimes matchs with that of the<br />

critics and sometimes does not.<br />

Throughout this dissertation I<br />

will try to throw new light on his works so as to illuminate the<br />

texts to clarify their intentions and effects.<br />

I shall return<br />

to the critics again to support and clarify my interpretation.<br />

Other critics will appear in my discussion when their views are<br />

relevant as parallels or contrasts to my own.<br />

Statement of Purpose<br />

My intention in this dissertation is to examine Lawrence's<br />

representative novels and analyse the pattern of conflict and
