Therefore, he, a guiltless man, goes to live with a 'friendly<br />

family'.<br />

His unique bond with his family — his wife — does<br />

not exist any more.<br />

The house which meant his hell is empty. He<br />

goes away. William is already dead. Annie has returned to her<br />

ordinary life.<br />

Arthur? The reader only knows he has come for her<br />

burial. He was not so attached to the family after all. It means<br />

nothing.<br />

But, what about Paul? Is he finally free from his<br />

mother's domination? No.<br />

I would rather say that he is partially<br />

free from Mrs Morel.<br />

He still has a big road to cross...<br />

Mrs Morel, throughout her married life, has struggled not<br />

to be defeated so that she could demand from her family the sense<br />

of success lacking in her frustrated choice in marrying the wrong<br />

man.<br />

Had she not been 'forced' to die because of her cancer and<br />

because of the overdose of morphine Paul gave her, I am sure she<br />

would have lasted as long as she could to force the family to<br />

remain under her control.<br />

She can be seen as that kind of person<br />

who, though suffering the most horrible pains, is still able to<br />

germinate evil seeds in the minds of the others.<br />

Throughout her<br />

life she has distilled in the conscience of her family, and more<br />

specifically in Paul's, the poison of guilt and the inferiority<br />

complex.<br />

Through her poison she destroyed her life and that of<br />

her husband, who has never been able to grow as human beings grow<br />

as they get old.<br />

She also destroyed William's life making him<br />

feel guilty for having chosen a woman who was not like his mother,<br />

and also she has contributed to Paul's near destruction.<br />

I say<br />

near due to the fact that he is the only one who is still able to<br />

redirect his life taking another road which is not the same as<br />

that one she tried to make him follow.<br />

She destroyed Paul's relationship with Miriam because she<br />

could not allow her beloved son to marry a woman who had the same
