<strong>Halifax</strong> Water Integrated Resource Plan<br />

IRP Planning Context and Levels of Service<br />

The City of Dartmouth (now part of HRM) water supply system dates back to the<br />

nineteenth century.<br />

Lamont and Topsail Lakes were originally used as the raw water supply for Dartmouth.<br />

Due to increasing demands in the early 1990’s, Lake Major became the largest source of<br />

water for Dartmouth. The Lake Major Water Supply Plant (WSP) was commissioned in<br />

1999.<br />

The current Bennery Lake WSP was commissioned in 1987 by the County of <strong>Halifax</strong> (now<br />

part of HRM). The WSP was built due to the business park development (Aerotech) in<br />

the vicinity of the <strong>Halifax</strong> Stanfield International Airport (HSIA). The operation of the<br />

WSP was transferred from HRM to <strong>Halifax</strong> Water in 2006.<br />

<strong>Halifax</strong> Water owns and operates a total of nine water supply plants. Three are the large<br />

facilities named above. Six small water supply plants service the rural/suburban area of<br />

HRM. The systems are summarized in Table 3.2.<br />
