can understand and run. All programs must ultimately be reduced to<br />

this basic level to be operated on by the computer. In the case <strong>of</strong><br />

the 8080 microprocessor, the program is in an "object code" or<br />

"machine language", since the "machine" or 8080 CPU understands it.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>SOL</strong>OS program contained in the personality module is stored in<br />

this machine language form, and the computer can therefore run<br />

directly from this program. Since the <strong>SOL</strong>OS program is contained in<br />

permanent ROM which is plugged directly into the computer, the <strong>SOL</strong>OS<br />

program is always available, and is automatically selected whenever<br />

the power switch <strong>of</strong> the Sol is turned on. <strong>The</strong>re is also provision for<br />

returning at all times to the command mode <strong>of</strong> <strong>SOL</strong>OS. From the command<br />

mode other programs may be brought in for various operations or stored<br />

on cassette tape. <strong>The</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> the computer's memory may be<br />

displayed or changed. <strong>The</strong> command mode also performs "housekeeping"<br />

functions such as setting the rate at which data is read from tape, or<br />

the rate at which characters are displayed on the video monitor.<br />
