Initial Counseling Session
Sustain, Support and Defend
Who: Mobilization Branch.
What: Initial Counseling Session for new Rating Period (1 Apr-31 Mar).
Purpose: Discuss overall Individual Job Performance, with future
expectations, and professional growth as a DA Civilian.
Summary:
‣ Initial counseling with written performance plan which documented
expectations and responsibilities that will lead to the Annual Evaluation.
‣ Discussed each Value/Responsibility of the Evaluation Form, career
goals and training listed on the Individual Development Plan (IDP).
‣ Ensured a clear understanding of requirements and what’s expected
for continued success based on organizational mission and goals. Plus,
a focus on professional growth as a DA Civilian and a person.
End State:
The best counseling is looking forward, concentrating on the future and
what needs to be done better. It’s a sound and continuing basis for
effective supervisor and subordinate partnership in pursuit of common
goals. Counseling should always be conducted in a timely manner.
Counseling only at the end of the period rating is too late since
misunderstandings that impact performance and work related behavior
cannot be resolved in time for improvement before the rating period.
