Import Excel Files<br />

To open an SPSS file (Windows):<br />

1. Select File > Open.<br />

2. From the list next to File name (or the Files of type list on Windows XP), select SPSS Data Files<br />

(*.sav).<br />

3. Select the SPSS file.<br />

4. (Optional) To specify the column headings, select one of the following Set <strong>JMP</strong> column names from<br />

options:<br />

– SPSS Labels (or Use Label Names for Column Names on Windows XP) creates column headings<br />

from SPSS labels.<br />

– SPSS Variable Names (or Use Variable Names for Column Names on Windows XP) creates<br />

column headings from variable names.<br />

5. Click Open.<br />

<strong>JMP</strong> opens the file as a data table.<br />

To open an SPSS file (Macintosh):<br />

1. Select File > Open.<br />

2. Select the SPSS file.<br />

3. (Optional) To specify the column headings, do one of the following<br />

– Deselect Use SPSS Labels as Headings to convert variable names to column headings.<br />

– Select Use SPSS Labels as Headings to convert labels to column headings.<br />

4. Click Open.<br />

<strong>JMP</strong> opens the file as a data table.<br />

Import Excel Files<br />

When you open an Excel file in <strong>JMP</strong>, the file is automatically converted to a data table. <strong>JMP</strong> can<br />

automatically convert the first row into column headings. If you do not select this option, the columns are<br />

named Column 1, Column 2, and so on.<br />

<strong>JMP</strong> can also automatically open each worksheet in the spreadsheet as a separate data table. You select this<br />

option in the preferences or when you open a spreadsheet. See “General” on page 365 in the “<strong>JMP</strong><br />

Preferences” chapter for details about Excel preferences.<br />

<strong>JMP</strong> also opens Excel files from Web sites that do not require you to log in. On Windows, follow the<br />

procedure in this section. On Macintosh, use the File > Internet Open command. See “Import Remote<br />

Files and Web Pages” on page 61 for more information.<br />

To open an Excel file (Windows):<br />

1. Select File > Open.<br />

2. Select the Excel file type (Excel Files (*.xls, *.xlsm, *.xlsx)).
