4.2 Dynamic Packag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

4.2.1 Introduction<br />

Dynamic packag<strong>in</strong>g (DP) is <strong>the</strong> travel <strong>in</strong>dustry jargon for a user centred, cheaper <strong>and</strong><br />

more flexible way of assembl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> book<strong>in</strong>g a personalised holiday, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> web <strong>and</strong><br />

associated application of technology. The phrase is rarely seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> public literature on<br />

a travel web site. Instead marketers have adopted more straightforward descriptions of<br />

<strong>the</strong> technology: Book Toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> Save, Build Your Own, or Flight + Hotel, etc. From<br />

<strong>the</strong> end customer / consumer view, DP is an onl<strong>in</strong>e real-time service which mimics <strong>the</strong><br />

experience of visit<strong>in</strong>g a travel agent <strong>and</strong> negotiat<strong>in</strong>g a deal exactly as <strong>the</strong> consumer<br />

wishes. From <strong>the</strong> travel service provider view, DP automatically comb<strong>in</strong>es offer<strong>in</strong>gs from<br />

more than one data source on dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to customer preferences. Us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pre-determ<strong>in</strong>ed packag<strong>in</strong>g rules, which are set <strong>and</strong> controlled by <strong>the</strong> service provider, <strong>and</strong><br />

hid<strong>in</strong>g price transparency on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual components, a comb<strong>in</strong>ed price is determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

for <strong>the</strong> chosen package. The book<strong>in</strong>g can <strong>the</strong>n be confirmed <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle user purchas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

transaction. Depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> contracts <strong>and</strong> “hidden” discounts <strong>in</strong> place with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ventory providers (such as global distribution systems, <strong>in</strong>surance, or travel suppliers<br />

such as airl<strong>in</strong>es, hotels, car rental companies, tours, activities) an attractive price <strong>and</strong><br />

assurance of a complete travel service can be offered for <strong>the</strong> entire package.<br />

Dynamic packag<strong>in</strong>g (DP) has been heavily discussed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> sector as a new<br />

“Wundermittel” (“miracle cure”, Fettner 2006) which offers both <strong>the</strong> supply <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong><br />

side substantial advantages. DP can be considered as a key issue <strong>in</strong> e-<strong>tourism</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

maybe even as a next logical step <strong>in</strong> e-<strong>tourism</strong> development, empower<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> customer<br />

not only to search <strong>and</strong> book s<strong>in</strong>gle components, but also to assemble <strong>and</strong> book whole<br />

travel arrangements <strong>in</strong> real-time by means of web-based technology (configurators). 58<br />

As such, DP favours <strong>the</strong> process of dis-<strong>in</strong>termediation of traditional travel agencies by<br />

partially outsourc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir assembl<strong>in</strong>g-activities directly to customers. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

DP also enables re-<strong>in</strong>termediation, as <strong>the</strong>re are new onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>termediaries such Expedia<br />

or Orbitz that dom<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> field of DP (cf. Travel Weekley’s Power List).<br />

Def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>and</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ction<br />

Among many similar DP def<strong>in</strong>itions (cf. Fitzgerald 2004, Rogl 2003), <strong>the</strong> one from Kabbaj<br />

is ra<strong>the</strong>r concise <strong>and</strong> comprises several relevant elements: "DP means dynamically (i.e.,<br />

<strong>in</strong> real-time) putt<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r – <strong>and</strong> pric<strong>in</strong>g – a package of several major travel<br />

components, e.g., air flight legs, hotel nights, car rental days, etc., from heterogeneous<br />

suppliers <strong>and</strong> heterogeneous <strong>in</strong>formation sources or back-end reservation services, even<br />

as those provide frequently chang<strong>in</strong>g availability or prices” (Kabbaj 2003).<br />

This def<strong>in</strong>ition should be complemented by <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g elements, however. Different<br />

58<br />

An extensive analysis of DP markets, technologies, players <strong>and</strong> potentials for <strong>tourism</strong><br />

dest<strong>in</strong>ations is provided by <strong>the</strong> Salzburg Research study about “Dynamische Produktbündelung<br />

<strong>in</strong> Salzburger Tourismusdest<strong>in</strong>ationen. E<strong>in</strong>e Analyse von Potenzialen, Herausforderungen und<br />

Umsetzungsschritten” (Markus 2006).<br />
