have a major impact, as <strong>the</strong>y are a key <strong>in</strong>strument to optimise l<strong>in</strong>kages <strong>and</strong> thus<br />

The value system exp<strong>and</strong>s this concept by extend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> perspective beyond <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

e-Commerce, i.e. electronic transactions, occurs with<strong>in</strong> this value system.<br />

Key dimensions of this framework (notably <strong>in</strong>bound <strong>and</strong> outbound logistics, operations,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> value system) are reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Supply Cha<strong>in</strong> Management (SCM) concept.<br />

Here, <strong>the</strong> focus is on optimis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> procurement-production-delivery processes, not only<br />

between a company <strong>and</strong> its direct suppliers <strong>and</strong> customers, but also aim<strong>in</strong>g at a full<br />

vertical <strong>in</strong>tegration of <strong>the</strong> entire supply cha<strong>in</strong> (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier n suppliers). In this<br />

concept, each basic supply cha<strong>in</strong> is a cha<strong>in</strong> of sourc<strong>in</strong>g, production, <strong>and</strong> delivery<br />

processes with <strong>the</strong> respective process <strong>in</strong>terfaces with<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> between companies. 14 The<br />

analysis of <strong>the</strong> digital <strong>in</strong>tegration of supply cha<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> various <strong>in</strong>dustries has been an<br />

important <strong>the</strong>me <strong>in</strong> sectors studies previously prepared by e-Bus<strong>in</strong>ess W@tch.<br />

e-Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation<br />

A very important aspect for e-Bus<strong>in</strong>ess W@tch studies is <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>ICT</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>novation. The European Commission places great emphasis on <strong>the</strong> critical role of<br />

<strong>in</strong>novation for European <strong>bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong>es <strong>in</strong> order to stay competitive <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> global economy. 15<br />

On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, a strong competitive pressure provides powerful <strong>in</strong>centives for<br />

companies to cont<strong>in</strong>uously engage <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>and</strong> R&D. Thus, <strong>in</strong>novation, competition<br />

<strong>and</strong> competitiveness are closely <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

<strong>ICT</strong> have been identified <strong>and</strong> widely recognised as a major enabler of <strong>in</strong>novation, <strong>in</strong><br />

particular for process <strong>in</strong>novation. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> e-Bus<strong>in</strong>ess W@tch survey 2006,<br />
