Место встречи – Алекс<br />
«Алекс» – так ласково именуют берлинцы площадь Александерплатц,<br />
которая получила свое название в честь русского<br />
царя Александра I, посетившего Берлин в 1805 году. Когдато<br />
площадь была воловьим рынком, а затем учебным плацем.<br />
Со временем она превратилась в важнейший деловой<br />
и транспортный центр восточной части города. Сегодняшний<br />
облик площади – это результат социалистического градостроительства<br />
в 60-е годы на месте развалин, оставленных<br />
второй мировой войной. Окружающий Александрплатц урбанистический<br />
пейзаж с высотными зданиями и шпилем<br />
телебашни украшают несколько исторических памятников<br />
старого Берлина: церковь Святой Марии, Красная ратуша,<br />
фонтан «Нептун». Последний был создан в 1888 г. и поначалу<br />
стоял перед императорским дворцом. Подводный царь<br />
восседает посередине фонтана, а на его парапете расположились<br />
четыре полуодетые дамы с пышными формами – скульптурные<br />
аллегории Эльбы, Вислы, Одера и Рейна. Наиболее<br />
привлекательные части тел бронзовых фигур отполированы<br />
до блеска! Красная ратуша из красного кирпича, расположена<br />
в географическом центре Берлина. Она напоминает итальянские<br />
и фландрские ратуши эпохи Возрождения. Фриз,<br />
проходящий по ее фасаду, иллюстрирует историю города<br />
вплоть до основания империи в 1871 г. Сегодня здесь находится<br />
резиденция берлинского бургомистра.<br />
‘Let’s meet at Alex’<br />
“Alex” is the name good-natured Berliners typically give to Alexanderplatz (Alexander Square),<br />
named after Russian Tsar Alexander I, who visited Berlin in 1805. In previous centuries the<br />
square was once a bull market and later entered use as a military training facility. In the present<br />
day the place has developed into an important business centre and transportation hub for the<br />
eastern part of the city. Its unique appearance owes to the socialist style of urban development<br />
in the 1960s when the area was rebuilt from the ashes of World War II. Several other historic<br />
places exist in the urban sprawl around Alexanderplatz, where high-rise buildings and the iconic<br />
TV tower loom over the skyline: St. Mary’s Church, the Red City Hall (Rotes Rathaus) and the<br />
Neptune Fountain. The latter was created in 1888 and initially stood near the imperial palace.<br />
The Roman god of the sea sits at the centre of the fountain surrounded by fabulous half-naked<br />
nymphs symbolizing the Elbe, Vistula, Oder and Rhine rivers. Curious visitors may notice that<br />
the most attractive parts of these nymphs have been caressed so intensely over the years that<br />
the bronze gleams in the sun! The Red City Hall, meanwhile, stands at the geographical heart<br />
of Berlin and has much in common with similar buildings in Italy and Flanders that date back<br />
to the Renaissance. A frieze along its façade depicts numerous scenes from the city’s history up<br />
until 1871, while the building itself remains in use as the office for the Mayor of Berlin.<br />
