Install clutch backing plate with flat surface down if it<br />

was removed. It may be necessary to tap plate into place<br />

with soft hammer (Fig. 75).<br />

Backing Plate<br />

Install rear unit internal gear with mark "up" if the gear<br />

was originally removed. Position gear against clutch backing<br />

plate. Slight tapping with soft hammer may be necessary<br />

(Fig. 76).<br />

Drive Flange Snap Ring<br />

Set rear unit assembly into holding fixture J-6116 with<br />

shaft end down. As unit is lowered into fixture, lift up on<br />

drum and remove drive flange retainer J-6120.<br />

CAUTION: Do not lift on output shaft after J-<br />

6120 is removed.<br />

Position thrust washer in counterbore of output shaft and<br />

retain with petrolatum (Fig. 78).<br />

Apply Hydra-Matic oil to faces of the seven drive and<br />

seven driven plates, and alternately install them in rear unit<br />

drum. Start with drive (composition) and finish with driven<br />

(steel). Install all drive plates with same side up. Assemble<br />

driven plates with lugs in rear unit drum slots so that<br />

notches in lugs are all in line (Fig. 79).<br />

Install output shaft and reverse drive flange asembly into<br />

NOTE: Indexing the notches nests the plates together<br />

so that the waves are all in the same<br />

direction (no gaps between plates).<br />

Install main shaft and sun gear assembly into output shaft<br />

in rear unit, meshing sun gear with planet pinions of output<br />

shaft.
