relate to <strong>the</strong> Trail’s significance, interpretive <strong>the</strong>mes, and targeted audiences.<br />
Visitor experience objectives define desired end results, not <strong>the</strong> means for attaining those<br />
results. Specific strategies and methods for reaching <strong>the</strong>se objectives will be identified in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Taking Action section of <strong>the</strong> plan.<br />
The following visitor experience objectives are derived from <strong>the</strong> interpretive scoping<br />
meetings held throughout <strong>the</strong> Chesapeake region in 2007-2008 and through additional<br />
consultation. While most objectives are applicable to multiple categories of potential trail<br />
users, some pertain to particular targeted audiences.<br />
Trail users (watershed residents and visitors) will have opportunities to:<br />
Trail Orientation<br />

Understand <strong>the</strong> diverse nature and extensiveness of <strong>the</strong> Chesapeake Bay region<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Trail.<br />
Acknowledge that <strong>the</strong> Trail traces <strong>the</strong> routes of <strong>Captain</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Smith</strong>’s 1607-1609<br />
exploratory voyages in <strong>the</strong> Bay and its tributaries.<br />

Understand <strong>the</strong> purpose of <strong>the</strong> Trail, how <strong>the</strong> Trail is managed, and who <strong>the</strong><br />
various partners are.<br />
Understand that <strong>the</strong> Trail consists of both land and water sites and routes that are<br />
accessible via a variety of transportation modes, including: motor boating, sailing,<br />
paddling, car or bus touring, biking, hiking, and more.<br />
Understand that <strong>the</strong> Trail is evolving and learn about new opportunities that<br />
become available as <strong>the</strong> Trail develops and grows.<br />
Be motivated to visit Trail segments and sites and embark on <strong>the</strong>ir own journey of<br />
discovery through self-guided and/or guided experiences.<br />
