Chesapeake Bay Indian Tribes and Descendant Communities
The experiences and stories of the Chesapeake Bay tribes are intricately entwined with
many of the resources and storylines associated with the Trail. It is essential to engage
contemporary tribal representatives and descendant communities in developing,
providing and participating in programs and visitor opportunities along the Trail. All
efforts to engage the various tribes and communities of the region should be done with
respect and sensitivity. Prerequisites for approaching and working with group
representatives and members include an understanding and appreciation of present-day
tribal mores (including communication preferences), and inter-tribal relationships. It is
also important to know what associations, if any, a particular tribe has with the Trail to
date.
The NPS works closely with the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs and the
Virginia Council on Indians. Numerous Chesapeake Bay tribes have consulted on
several Gateways and Watertrails Network initiatives and site-specific projects. Tribal
representatives have participated in Trail scoping meetings and are invested in Trail
planning and development.
