Gunung Stong State Park Preliminary Management Plan
protection
5. Resource
management
6. Protected area policy
and planning
(Amendment) Enactment 2004, the Protection of
Wild Life Act 1972, the Environmetal Quality
Act 1974, the National Forestry Act 1984, the
National Parks Act 1984, and the other relevant
legislation.
Sustainable management of the biological and
physical resources of GSSP, biological
monitoring, indicators, carrying capacity, limits
of acceptable change.
Policy and planning that balances conservation
with the needs and requirements of ecotourism,
recreation and local communities.
7. Communications Presentation techniques, public relations, basic
English, guiding techniques, awareness, reportwriting,
interpretive displays.
8. Protected area
operations
Operational competency that includes project
management, scheduling of duties and
responsibilities, assignment of staff, field
monitoring.
9. Nature guiding This is in collaboration with the Ministry of
Tourism and the Department of Wildlife and
National Parks. Successful participants will be
certified with a Green Badge, without which it is
illegal to do guiding.
10. Emergency rescue,
rapid response, firstaid,
and CPR
11. Navigation and map
reading
12. Information
technology
The ability to deal with emergencies in the
wilderness is of primary importance, due to
distance from the nearest aid station, the
challenging terrain and the different levels of
fitness of visitors. Park staff and guides are the
first line of emergency aid during these
situations.
In the wilderness, the risk of getting lost is great,
especially if one is separated from the group.
Knowledge of navigation and map-reading (use
of compass, GPS, and recognition of physical
features) is important for park staff and guides
that will be leading groups to the peaks, and also
involved in search and rescue activities.
There must be a basic competency level in usage
of information communications technology
(ICT), especially in word-processing and
internet communications.
6.15 Research
6.15.1 Areas of Study
As a newly protected area, there is a need to increase the body of knowledge on the
biodiversity, tourism, and economic resources within GSSP. Some areas of study relevant to
GSSP are suggested in Table 6.13.
