STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES 4 4.1 The Development of Strategic Objectives The development of strategic approaches is required in order to justify and inform the design rationale for improvements to the public realm. This section sets out those strategic objectives. Strategic Objectives 1. Linkages Emphasise important linkages, including links between retail & employment anchors and links to surrounding residential communities, in order to maximise accessibility and wayfinding. 2. Local Distinctiveness Enhance local distinctiveness, so that <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent develops a strong regional identity 3. Materials Matrix Develop a materials matrix, in order to articulate the hierarchy of public spaces 4. Exceptional Quality Achieve outstanding quality of design within the spaces and streets in the City Centre that supports outdoor amenity use and the hosting of major events and festivals, in addition to reversing negative perceptions of <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent 5. Sustainable Principles Incorporate sustainable principles into the public realm, including green infrastructure that will mitigate against climate changes in the foreseeable future, sustainable transport links that allow for choice of transport modes and management and maintenance. public art promotes spatial identity Tontine Street Classic paving bond using simple paving module Feature lighting Public amenity use 17
