6.13 Roads and Open Car Parks
• Avenue tree planting and hedging should be integrated in to
the design of new roads and car parks; tree planting and hedging
should be retrofitted within existing roads where space,
servicing and utilities allows
• The implementation of green infrastructure along the roads
and within open car parks will mitigate against climate change
through the provision of shade and evapotranspiration, in addition
to carbon sequestration in the long term.
• The implementation of green infrastructure will have a significant
visual impact and complement the development of the
green zone associated with proposed building developments.
This will help to develop the wider green character that is to be
associated with the City Centre identity in the long term
• The implementation of sustainable urban drainage within all
proposed car parks will contribute significantly to the wider
sustainable urban drainage strategy within the City Centre
• Proposals for car parks should identify minimum and maximum
capacities for car parks, and define an overspill area. The
overspill area should promote a green approach that promotesthe
