BASELINE SPATIAL HIERARCHY SUMMARY 62 6.1 Introduction This section illustrates the hierarchy of spaces within the City Centre. The hierarchy serves to set out an indicator of character and design quality that will be expected for specific areas, according to the classification given to them in the spatial hierarchy. A vision and key characteristics are set out for the more important spaces and streets within the City Centre. The hierarchy is important to define as it helps visitors to orientate themselves within the City Centre and promotes legibility. 6.2 Spatial Hierarchy The hierarchy of streets and spaces is set out fully in the following pages, as follows:- Focal Areas • Main Squares • Other Public Squares • Green Spaces • Feature Areas Retail Streets • Pedestrian Friendly Streets • Other Primary Streets • Alleyways/Lanes • Boulevard Streets Key Linkages • Secondary Streets • Pedestrian Crossing Points • Roads & Open Car Parks Detailed urban design principles relating to the streets and spaces are set out in the following pages, with suggested materials. BASELINE SPATIAL HIERARCHY SUMMARY 62 6.3 Main Squares • The two main squares shall be located at Fountain Square (existing) and adjacent to the Victoria Hall (subject to the East West Centre and Transport Interchange schemes being implemented). • The main squares will serve as a internationally acclaimed contemporary civic spaces: destinations in their own right. • They will be required to accommodate large gatherings of people, to support the City’s capacity to host important events and festivals. • They will form important anchor points within the City Centre that visitors can identify with and orientate from. • They will be situated at strategic locations that will enforce important linkages. Fountain Square • They will articulate the transformation of Hanley Town Centre to <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent City Centre. • They will be the focus for high concentrations of mixed uses to provide activity during the day and into the evening • They will be designed to facilitate creative uses and activities within the spaces to ensure vitality on a day to day basis and to promote usage throughout the year.
