STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES 4 4.2 Emphasising Linkages There are numerous existing and proposed assets within the City Centre that need to be linked closely, in order to ensure the successul regeneration of the City Centre. These linkages need to be clearly defined, in order to maximise accessibility and wayfinding. The enhancements to the public realm will achieve these enhanced linkages and promote the full offer that the City Centre is intended to have. Existing Assets Existing assets within and in close proximity to the City Centre are listed as follows:- • the retail heart (incl. Stafford Street & Parliament Row) • Potteries Shopping Centre • existing Cultural Quarter, to include the Museum, Art Gallery & Library, Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall • Surrounding residential areas • Central Forest Park and the Historic Hanley Park Proposed Major Developments The following proposed major development schemes are located within the City Centre and work is already underway to deliver them. 1. City Centre Transport Interchange 2. East West Centre 3. Central Business District 4. New Tesco Superstore & Waterloo Gateway 5. Enhancements to Potteries Way Ring Road 6. Cycle City Initiatives Implementation of the above schemes is expected to follow in the short to medium term. There are four proposed major development schemes that are located outside of the City Centre boundary, but will complement the City Centre, as follows:- 7. University Boulevard & associated street car linking to wider conurbation of North Staffordshire 8. University Quarter 9. City Waterside, Derby Street linkage & associated Caldon Canal Way enhancements 10. Shelton and associated Acorn development. 18 19
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES 4 4.3 Enhancing Local Distinctiveness The public realm needs to play a part in enhancing local distinctiveness, so that <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent develops a strong regional identity. An assessment of local distinctiveness has been included within the baseline document supporting this public realm strategy. Historic building traditions often have a large impact upon local distinctiveness. The Victorian tradition of emphasising corner building elevations with high quality detailing, combined with the use of readily available local materials provide a strong starting point for highlighting key points within the City Centre and aiding wayfinding. The plan opposite shows the location of distinctive corner buildings within the City Centre that need to be highlighted through public realm treatments and owner/occupier investment. The development of the City Centre should embrace this tradition of corner elevations, particularly where proposed new developments are located adjacent to key streets.
