FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE – CORE,
EXTENDED, AND IMMERSION FRENCH, GRADES 9
AND 10 (1999) AND GRADES 11 AND 12 (2000)
Although none of the expectations in the French as a Second Language (FSL) curriculum
explicitly addresses environmental education, in each of the strands in the various courses – Oral
Communication, Reading, and Writing – the development of environmental understanding can
be fostered through both the learning context (e.g., a topic, thematic unit, or issue related to the
environment) and materials (e.g., books, websites, media). Students could address aspects of life
and/or culture in French-speaking countries or communities from an environmental perspective
or present a topic from an environmental point of view in a debate, panel discussion, speech, or
written assignment.
