JOHN YECK'S "LET'S HAVE BETTER MOTTOES ASSOCIATION" LETTERS
Some years ago, an ex-circus bandsman, Fred Gymer, decided to go into advertising copywriting.
To attract clients, he created the mythical Let's Have Better Mottoes Association and began a series
of tongue-in-cheek letters, each accompanied by a motto of-the-month to be hung on recipients'
walls. The series became quite popular, and many companies asked Gymer to adapt his letters for
their own mailings.
In many businesses, the biggest job for direct mail is to keep the company name in front of customers.
This is a case that often calls for lighthearted copy. And no syndicated mailing series has
done this job so well over such a long period as the Let's Have Better Mottoes Association.
When Fred Gymer died some years ago, most everyone thought the series would die along with
him. Writing such letters month after month requires a very special talent. Fortunately the one
person uniquely talented to keep the series going decided to acquire the business and today new
motto cards continue to be hung each month in homes and offices throughout the world. And a
new generation of readers eagerly awaits the monthly letters which flow from the talented pen of
John Yeck.
While we've included just one of the monthly Let's Have Better Mottoes Association letters and
accompanying motto created by John Yeck, it's typical of the long-running series.
