CHAMPAIGN COUNTY COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM "LONELY MAN" LETTER

taught at the University of Illinois for many years by Jack Maguire. But Maguire is more than just
an outstanding educator, he writes great letter copy. One of his classic letters was originally written
for a local Council on alcoholism, but was subsequently copied by similar organizations in

Tonight he's quietly resting in a clean hospital bed. He has the best of
medical and psychiatric care — all from professional volunteers.
No more D.T.'s. No more hemorrage. No more of that cold, hollow,
empty feeling of fear and futility.
He's thinking thoughts that speak of gratitude to man and thankfulness
to God.
The letter describes another lonely man whose alcoholism remains untreated. It then closes with
a strong bid for contributions:
And this postscript:
Your contribution could tilt the scales so one human life moves on to
dignity and thankfulness.
