Aagjuuk<br />
Two specific stars, one bigger than the other.<br />
(Two stars in the constellation Aquila, Altair<br />
and Tarazed.)<br />
Aattaujaq<br />
A form of playing ball, catching the ball and<br />
throwing it to team members (any number of<br />
teams, any number of players).<br />
Aglu<br />
A seal breathing hole in the ice.<br />
Akittittuq<br />
The stitch used for sewing a tent by having<br />
one person on the inside while the other is<br />
outside. The one on the inside pushes the<br />
needle out so that the other person can pull<br />
the thread through. The person on the<br />
outside then pushes the needle in for the<br />
other person to pull. Same stitch used for<br />
sewing in a window.<br />
Aksunnguqtuq<br />
When a child is walking and no longer<br />
crawling. A toddler. The term refers to when<br />
the child is old enough that there isn’t as<br />
much fear of the child dying as an infant.<br />
Akulliruut<br />
[Mittimatalik] The month “when the caribou<br />
hair is in between” (neither too thin nor too<br />
thick; just right for making it clothing). The<br />
month equivalent to September. [Iglulik]<br />
Amiraijaut.<br />
Akuttujuuk<br />
“The two far apart.” The appearance of these<br />
stars while there was still light signified the<br />
imminent return of the sun. (Betelgeuse and<br />
Bellatrix.)<br />
Aliqa<br />
Males older sister (archaic).<br />
Allijjivik<br />
A section of an iglu where one would store<br />
items that were not going to be put inside the<br />
iglu; a kind of storage porch.<br />
Amaruujaq<br />
A game of chasing called “being like wolves”<br />
(similar to British Bulldog) played by people<br />
of all ages. Young men liked it because it<br />
gave them an excuse to chase the girl they<br />
were interested in. Young women liked it<br />
because they got to see who was interested<br />
in them. Old women liked it because it gave<br />
them the chance to run around. Young<br />
children liked it because they got to see who<br />
they could outrun.<br />
Amauti<br />
A parka with a pouch and a large hood for<br />
carrying babies.<br />
Amialliruut<br />
[Mittimatalik] The month when caribou<br />
antlers are losing their covers. The month<br />
equivalent to October. [Iglulik] Ukialliruut.<br />
Amiq<br />
Skin with fur.<br />
