Avutijuq<br />

Moving away from the person one has been<br />

living with, to live on one’s own.<br />

Igunaujannguaq<br />

Agame in which the person in the centre<br />

tries to remain stiff. He is held in place by the<br />

feet of the people who are sitting in a circle.<br />

He is passed around hand over hand.<br />

Whoever drops him is the next “frozen<br />

walrus carcass.”<br />

Iirngaaq<br />

Throat-singing (a term used only in some<br />

communities); in others it is Piqqusiraarniq,<br />

[Iglulik], Qiarvaaqtuq [Arviat], Katajjaq,<br />

[Nunavik and South Baffin]. Katajjaq is<br />

becoming the most commonly used term.<br />

Ijirait<br />

(Legendary) invisible people; when<br />

Uinigumasuittuq sent her dog children off,<br />

these are the ones who remained in the land<br />

of the Inuit but are not visible to them except<br />

in the form of caribou; also Ijiqqat.<br />

Ikiaqpavvik<br />

[Mittimatalik] The sun is higher in the sky<br />

but still not too high. The month equivalent<br />

to March. [Iglulik] Avunniit.<br />

Iksirarjuaq<br />

A Catholic priest.<br />

Iksutit<br />

Heather; also qijuttaat.<br />

Iksuut<br />

[Mittimatalik] The month of “the sound of<br />

rushing of water as the rivers start to run.”<br />

The month equivalent to July. [Iglulik]<br />
