Kaltim Green Program<br />
The Government of <strong>East</strong> <strong>Kalimantan</strong> has created the Kaltim Green program, the province’s<br />
framework for sustainable development and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.<br />
The program was announced at the provincial event “Regional Initiatives in Anticipation of Global<br />
Warming and Climate Change Mitigation” (“Inisiatif Daerah Dalam Mengantisipasi Pemanasan<br />
Global and Mitigasi Perubahan Iklim”) held on 1 December 2009 in Balikpapan.<br />
The Kaltim Green Program has four objectives:<br />
• Improve the overall quality of life of people of <strong>East</strong> <strong>Kalimantan</strong>, balancing economic, social,<br />
cultural, and environmental aspects<br />
• Reduce the threat of ecological and climate change threats such as flooding, landslides,<br />
droughts, forest fires across <strong>East</strong> <strong>Kalimantan</strong><br />
• Reduce pollution and degradation of the quality of terrestrial ecosystems, water, and air in <strong>East</strong><br />
<strong>Kalimantan</strong><br />
• Increase the knowledge and awareness among the institutions and people of <strong>East</strong> <strong>Kalimantan</strong><br />
that the conservation of natural resources is important and that resources must be used wisely<br />
The Kaltim Green Declaration, agreed to by the Provincial and District governments across <strong>East</strong><br />
<strong>Kalimantan</strong>, acknowledges the urgency of action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and<br />
includes five commitments:<br />

Carry out low carbon emission development;<br />
Integrate sustainable development targets for the region;<br />
Analyze and reform current development policy accordingly;<br />
d) Promote the local research required to address climate change issues by supporting the<br />
province’s network of universities and colleges (especially in forestry); and<br />
e)<br />
Support mitigation efforts in cooperation with international institutions.<br />
This <strong>Environmentally</strong> <strong>Sustainable</strong> <strong>Development</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong> has been created as part of the Kaltim<br />
Green Program and is a plan of action to achieve this vision.
