RESULTS chapter four when results are not sufficient to continue? The decision to “pull the plug” may come from partners or funders when they feel that their investment is not cost effective. Customers or constituents could choose another alternative if they feel that the results do not warrant their continued patronage. The Strategy The partnership and community should anticipate the possibility that an effort is not sustainable. The best approach is to develop an exit strategy up front. The partnership should identify the legal and service activities that still must be accomplished should the organization cease to exist. It has an obligation to ensure that whatever its mission, the service rendered does not abruptly end, leaving the customers and community without recourse. Going “out of business” is not the only available exit strategy. In many cases, the partnership can morph into a different structure or adjust its mission to increase cost effectiveness. Analyzing the initiative’s parts and correcting deficiencies are critical. Whatever the exit strategy, the partners and community should learn from the experience. The community need that first produced the partnership still would exist. Although a specific attempt may have proved ineffective, it could provide excellent lessons on how to structure future partnerships. 74 Powering the Future: High-Performance Partnerships
