UCIL –
The Early Years
Almost five decades earlier UCIL
had begun its operations to mine
the uranium deposits, discovered
in the tribal belt of Jharkhand’s
East Singhbum district. The condition
of the impoverished tribals
- was simply ‘pathetic’. The
tribal population not only faced
severe socio-economic marginalization
but also the threat of losing
their distinctive culture and
identity, rooted in their livelihood
patterns.
Starting our operations in this
densely forested impoverished
tribal belt of Jharkhand, we
realized from inception that
lack of skill development was the
gravest issue which was driving
the tribal’s into an abyss of
poverty and a mire of ritualistic
customs. We thus decided to
directly reach out to the neighbouring
society to enquire about
their needs. We called this exercise
‘Participatory Community
Consultations’.
These consultations helped us
asses and analyze the needs of the
society and evolve necessary skill
Skill Development
Initiatives In UCIL
UCIL has undertaken several skill
development initiatives and has
integrated these with the business
plan of the company.
Skill development has been regarded
by UCIL as the cornerstone
for career building not only
for its employees but also for
making the neighborhood villagers
self-reliant, self-sufficient and
financially independent. We have
thus adopted a two pronged skill
development program - for our
employees and for the neighbourhood,
with a collective, synergistic
and futuristic approach.
Skill Development of UCIL
Employees
Continual knowledge up-gradation
is vital to any organisation’s
progress. In this regard our Group
Vocational Training Centre and
Management Training Centre are
the central training hubs for all
trainings imparted to UCIL employees
at all levels. These skill
development based trainings are
integrated with activities relating
to all our units. Training modules
have been formulated with a suitable
mix of practical and theoretical
training depending upon the
level.
The manifestation of success
of our skill development programme
is seen in upgrading skill
levels of unskilled tribals whose
land is used by Company to make
them trained operators of highly
advanced modern trackless mining
equipment.
