life of an individual and the whole society was extremely
politicised and under full control of two
great forces: that of state authorities and the
church. The attitude of both societies towards
Western Europe and emigration was also similar;
for both nations it appeared to be a paradise of
which they had always dreamed and at the same
time hated it, as they were perceived as secondclass
citizens there, living on the edge of a true life.
At the same time, the money they earned in EU
countries made them admired in their own countries,
as they suddenly turned from the humiliated
ones to the rich and looked up to. Such anomalies
could not remain without influence on social life
in both countries. Participants of the classes came
to the conclusion that, at present, the identity of
both nations is being shaped anew and that they
are in the process of considerable changes.
Increase in awareness of the significance of
self-education
Participation in the project, and especially in
partner meetings in different cities across Europe,
as well as attendance in educational workshops
organised by the Library in Ursus, made Polish participants
realise the importance of self-education
through active participation in classes and meetings,
and, as a consequence, in social life.
Mirosława (65, Warsaw): It is not only about
sitting in a reading room. Now we are going to
Portugal, I have never been to Portugal, and I must
find out something about this country, I want to
know as much as possible.
Krystyna (70, Warsaw): The journey to
Leuven was so magical to me that, influenced by it,
I wrote a poem about Leuven which I presented to
Annemie Leyssen from Belgium.
Agnieszka (54, Gorlice): Reflections from the
meeting in Portugal - Margarida Morgado gave
a multimedia presentation on the activity of
the club from Castelo Branco. Special attention
should be devoted to the literary attempts made
by the club on the subjects such as: ‘The place of
my childhood’, ‘My childhood home’. It’s a great
idea to encourage especially older people to write,
because everybody likes bringing back memories
of the country of their childhood. I will try to use
it. Thanks to the READCOM project, people sharing
a passion for reading and displaying similar
sensitivity can stay in touch, regardless of country
borders, and be true partners.
Influence of international cooperation on
institutions
New quality of work
European cooperation under the READCOM
project has significantly changed the activity of
the Public Library in Ursus in terms of content-related
knowledge. Participation in the project has
also improved organisational skills within the institution
and its management culture.
The increased quantity and new quality of tasks
carried out under the project have influenced the
operations of the whole institution. The international
character of the project resulted in changes
in the priorities. A special kind of discipline has
been imposed during task completion, as no delays
or mistakes could be allowed. We were aware
that the Public Library in Ursus, being the project
coordinator and an institution from Eastern
Europe, was closely observed by its partners,
which were institutions with much greater experience
and prestige, to mention the well-known
across Europe University of Leuven or the Ministry
of Culture in Turkey. We were doing everything
to do well in our partners’ opinion. The ‘polnische
Wirtschaft’ complex motivated us to even more
intensive work. We simply had to be the best
coordinators of the project, we had to supervise
and carry out the project in a perfect way, and
