project also owing to the honorary patronage
of the Marshall of the Małopolskie Province and
media partners: Dziennik Polski daily and TVP3
Kraków TV station.
The project allowed WBT to gain a new element
for the library’s image and its mission, involving
the library’s young employees in working
with seniors (the S@S project) and training for
librarians from the region on the role of libraries
with respect to senior citizens. Moreover, WBT
acts for the benefit of including other libraries
in the region in the continuing education programme
and strives to involve libraries into international
activities.
Another step to be made by the Polish project
partners is establishing a regional network structure
focused on cooperation with senior citizens
relying on WBPK’s natural mission.
Senior citizens participating in the pilot training
found out that their peers from many European
countries experienced similar problems, even in
countries enjoying better developed democratic
mechanisms. Moreover, the project participants
have found out that getting involved in public
activities makes sense as it may bring about specific,
positive results for the whole community on
a local, regional and national level. They have also
discovered that it is possible to gain knowledge
and skills necessary for such activities. The most
remarkable results of the project are community
and inter-generational integration of senior citizens,
and raising of social awareness.
About the author
Jerzy Jedliński
Founder and President of the Polish-
German Association in Kraków. In 2006-
2009, he acted as an expert member of the
Małopolska Council for Public Benefit. In
1994-2006, he was active in the Kraków and
the region’s local governments. As a member
of the Kraków municipal authorities, he
coordinated the development and execution
of a cooperation programme for the Municipality
of Kraków and NGOs. He co-authored
the School of @ctive Seniors project. He also
co-authored one of the first European manuals
designed to stimulate senior citizens’ civic
activity. Jerzy Jedliński is a physicist, metallurgist
and doctor of chemistry by profession
and an academic teacher at the AGH University
of Science and Technology in Kraków. He
also acts as an advisor on knowledge society
to the Marshall of the Małopolskie Province.
