Aurora – Polaris Project. Senior Citizens’
Meetings with Astronomy
The Grundtvig ‘Aurora - Polaris’ project has a
two-part name. Aurora means polar lights, a wonderful
phenomenon in the sky. The other part of
the name - Polaris - refers to the Polar Star and is
the acronym of the name: “Partnership Opportunity
for Learning: Astronomy Resources for Inspiring
Seniors”.
Together with the Olsztyn Planetarium and Astronomical
Observatory (Olsztyńskie Planetarium i
Obserwatorium Astronomiczne – OPiOA) the following
institutions participate in the Aurora – Polaris
project: The SHARE Initiative Cic., Hereford from
England (Paul Haley, head of the institution, coordinates
the project), Astronomicky Ustav Slovenskej
Akademie vied (AISAS), Tatranska Lomnica
from Slovakia and the National and Kapodistrian
University of Athens from Greece. Our activity is
supported by www.astronomia.pl, the largest
Polish Internet astronomical portal, with whom
we closely cooperate and thanks to whom we
have become a partner of the Grundtvig Partnership
Project. Before, we had taken part in a
Comenius Programme project and
this way we had gained experience
necessary for effective communication
in a multicultural group and
had become familiar with practical
aspects and logistics of organising
meetings, workshops, etc. It also
aroused our interest in international
cooperation programmes, which
corresponded with the profile of
our institution as provided for in its
Memorandum of Association.
The aim of the project is to establish
direct, international cooperation
concerning popularisation of
astronomy among adults. Our actions
are addressed to senior people,
including the blind and visually
impaired. We commenced the
project in 2008 and will conclude
it in 2010. Along with our partners,
